SceptreNet was engaged to deliver a mission-critical infrastructure upgrade at Musgrove Park Hospital, incorporating:

  • A site-wide blown fibre ring connecting key hospital departments
  • High-performance CAT6A F/FTP cabling for clinical, administrative, and operational systems
  • A brand-new CR1 Data Centre at the heart of the hospital
  • Wireless connectivity to support staff mobility and IoT-enabled medical systems

The project demanded precision, scalability, and resilience, while minimising disruption in a live healthcare environment.

Blown Fibre Infrastructure

SceptreNet designed and deployed a robust, future-proof fibre backbone, providing multiple redundant routes and high-capacity connectivity across the MPH site:

New

site-wide blown fibre ring

7-way Blown Fibre Legs – Route A

7-way Blown Fibre Legs – Route B

16×

7-way Blown Fibre Legs – Route C

142×

12-core OS2 Blown Fibre Links

12-core OM4 Blown Fibre Links

new midpoint blowing stations for fibre deployment and maintenance

Over 10,000m of existing blown fibre tube was reused, and existing SM 9/125 fibre was carefully blown out and redirected via the new fibre ring, reducing material waste and environmental impact.

Structured Cabling & Data Networks

AAH / SSD & Hospital Buildings:

  • 332 × CAT6A F/FTP CommScope Data Outlets
  • 2 Cabinet Locations with 4 × Prism Comms Racks
  • Wireless Access Points deployed for campus coverage

New CR1 Data Centre:

  • 267 × CAT6A F/FTP CommScope Data Outlets
  • 1 Cabinet Location with 3 × Prism Comms Racks
  • 20 × Cabinet Data Centre including central Cold Aisle
  • 40 × APC PDUs for reliable, monitored power distribution
  • 19 × 12-core Fibre Links and 19 × 24-core CAT6A Panel-to-Panel Links

Why This Project Stands Out

Hospital-wide scale: Multiple departments connected with high-capacity blown fibre, including AAH, SSD, and the new CR1 Data Centre.

Redundancy & resilience: Multiple fibre legs (Routes A, B, C) and midpoint stations ensure network uptime for mission-critical hospital systems.

Future-proofed infrastructure: OS2 single-mode and OM4 multimode fibre, coupled with high-quality CAT6A cabling, allows for expansion and next-generation network applications.

High-performance data centre: Central Cold Aisle design, redundant power with APC PDUs, and advanced rack infrastructure for optimal performance.

Seamless wireless deployment: Ensured complete coverage across all upgraded areas, supporting staff, mobile devices, and medical systems.

Green sustainability: Reuse of over 10,000m of existing blown fibre tube and redirecting existing SM 9/125 fibre minimised waste, reduced carbon footprint, and aligned the project with environmental best practices.

Meticulous design & execution: SceptreNet’s team collaborated closely with hospital estates and IT departments to minimise disruption and deliver on time.

Outcome

The completed Musgrove Park Hospital network provides:

  • Reliable, resilient, and high-speed connectivity across all departments
  • Redundant fibre backbone for mission-critical systems
  • Future-ready infrastructure capable of supporting increased digital demands
  • Fully integrated new CR1 Data Centre with efficient cooling and power distribution
  • Comprehensive wireless coverage for staff mobility and connected medical equipment
  • Environmentally responsible installation, reusing existing fibre and ducting to reduce waste and support the hospital’s sustainability goals

This project exemplifies SceptreNet’s expertise in designing and delivering hospital-grade network solutions, combining cutting-edge technology, meticulous planning, and green-conscious execution to underpin critical healthcare operations.
