Overview

SceptreNet was selected to deliver the IT and fibre infrastructure for University Hospital Dorset’s new Pathology Building, a critical facility supporting diagnostics, clinical research, and patient care. The project demanded high reliability, robust network performance, and minimal disruption to ongoing hospital operations.

Working closely with JB Hopkins and Amiri Construction, and in direct collaboration with UHD, SceptreNet provided a full design-and-build solution that delivered a future-proof network while exceeding installation standards and project timelines.

The Pathology Building infrastructure was designed for high performance, resilience, and scalability:

Data & Cabling:

  • 1,100 CommScope CAT6A F/FTP data outlets – providing robust connectivity for clinical, administrative, and building systems.
  • Blown fibre infrastructure:
    • A-leg and B-leg feeds using 2 × 4-way blown fibre tubes
    • Internal diverse OS2 single-mode and multi-mode fibre links for high-speed backbone and network resilience.

Wireless & Network Deployment:

  • 60 Cisco Access Points deployed across the facility, delivering full wireless coverage.
  • Design and Build approach ensured wireless solution met exact coverage, capacity, and redundancy requirements.

Racks & Power:

  • 12 Cannon comms racks configured with cable management, labelling, and organisation to NHS standards.
  • APC PDUs installed for monitored and reliable power distribution.

Additional Infrastructure:

  • External CCTV links connected via OM4 fibre, ensuring high-quality surveillance and security across the site.

Why This Project Stands Out

Precision on a compact but critical project: delivering a high-density, future-ready network across a healthcare facility while maintaining operational continuity.

Blown fibre technology: enabled scalable, high-performance fibre backbone with minimal disruption.

Wireless excellence: 60 strategically deployed APs to cover clinical, administrative, and secure areas seamlessly.

Collaborative delivery: worked directly with UHD and main contractors to ensure every detail met hospital requirements.

Exceeding standards: project delivered on time, installation quality exceeded expectations, and every system was future-proofed.

Outcome

The completed Pathology Building network delivers a resilient, high-performance IT backbone, supporting clinical diagnostics, patient data systems, building management, and wireless mobility. The facility now benefits from:

  • High-speed, redundant fibre connections
  • Future-proof structured cabling with CommScope CAT6A outlets
  • Seamless wireless coverage for staff and critical systems
  • Monitored, secure power distribution and high-quality comms infrastructure

This project exemplifies SceptreNet’s ability to deliver world-class healthcare network solutions, combining technical expertise, meticulous planning, and strong collaboration with contractors and clients.

SceptreNet would like to thank JB Hopkins and Amiri Construction for their collaboration and dedication, which were instrumental in the successful delivery of this mission-critical project.
